Vacation Tip before leaving home

Before heading off on a vacation do yourself and the insurance companies a favor and turn your water off at the source.  Many homeowner water claims occur from broken pipes, such as:  water line behind toilet, frozen water pipe, water hose behind washing machine etc. READ MORE >>

my car is totaled, now what?

When a car is severely damaged, it can take 30 days or so before a car is deemed a total loss. The insurance companies have a process; unfortunately, it can take 30 or more days.  This process should not take this long, typically it is due to misunderstandings by insured and company as who's responsibility it will be to do the various things. What happens when a car is totaled in accident

When your car is totaled by your or the other insurance company it can be frustrating.  The insurance companies are only required to give you the current value of your car minus any prior damage and your deductible.  Typically an insurance company will total a car when damages exceed 70-80% of current value. Interior water damage with homeowner policies

When I hear water claims I cringe simply because there are covered and non-covered water damage claims.   I am referring to homeowner policies and using a common example, the company claims adjusters are much more tuned in on the issues. READ MORE >>

My tree hits your home, who pays?

With the spring in full motion in Midwest this 2019, I can bet there will be a a few calls about trees.   The way it works in insurance, if a tree falls on a home/fence/structure from a storm it's the damaged homes problem rather than the tree owners.  Some neighborly people will insist on splitting th cost. Winter Tip on chimneys

Winter has come across the nation and that means fires in fireplace.  I have a couple fires a month in my fireplace.   I try and clean out the ashes a few days later and reset wood, sticks and paper for the next fire.  A few weeks later I went to light that fire when I noticed some leaves on top of the cut wood. Hail claim to roof

In Missouri, most home insurance companies will only pay to replace an entire roof if there is enough hail evidence to entire roof.  It's very possible a home could require and entire new roof while a neighbor only has minimal damage. READ MORE >>

Dogs and homeowner insurance

Recently I read trade magazine about why homeowners insurance exclude certain dog breeds.   Apparently 1/3 of all homeowner claims are dog related and an average claim is $33,000.  The standard list of 5 is:  Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, Presa Canario and Chow Chow.  READ MORE >>

Direct Claim vs Indirect Claims

When hail season is upon us, there are DIRECT and INDIRECT claims that seem to crop up.  A direct claim is hail impacting 1/4 or 1/2 of siding on home; however, not impacting the other 1/2 of home.  In other words the hail dings are on 1/2 the house not the other 1/2. READ MORE >>

Why do homeowner losses cause increases and cancellation?

I have seen many insurance companies Non-Renew homeowner policy due to 2 small claims.  I advise is to not report a claim unless you know it's an expensive claim, such as a hail loss.  Before I would report a hail loss to an insurance company I would check with a qualified roofer to be sure there is plenty of damage.
