It's been a while since reviewed this important coverage. In Missouri, Un and Underinsured Motorist can be added to any auto policy with liability limits OVER the state minimum of 25,000/$50,000/$10,000( i.e. 50/100/50, 100/300/100 or 250/500/250).
An umbrella policy provides higher protection than normal auto, home, cycle and RV policies.
Specifically, when a person buys an umbrella policy of a million or more they typically have an option to ADD Un/Underinsured motorist coverage to the umbrella policy. Yes, this adds to the costs; however, it can be well worth it if you are injured to the extent of paralysis and long term rehab from an auto accident.
If a person only carries state minimum liability limits of 25/50/10 or 25/50/25 they cannot purchase underinsured motorist. Anyone with limits over state minimum limits can and should purchase un and underinsured motorist limits which MATCH their liability limits.
Uninsured motorist coverage pays what a tortfeasor's liability should pay. Not only does it cover your medical bills, caused by the other driver, but it can include pain and suffering, lost wages and other non-medical losses. Some folks say, but I have medical insurance why do I need this? 1) It is mandatory to purchase in MO, 2) Your medical payments do not include lost wages, disability and pain and suffering. I think medical insurance ONLY covers direct medical costs not the indirect costs, such as lost wages, pain and suffering, rehab for certain living arrangements.
